An elder statesman of British mountaineering will join a walk across Morecambe Bay to help raise cash for a conservation charity.
Sir Chris Bonington will be led by Queen’s Guide Cedric Robinson on the 13km (8-mile) walk, which members of the public can join.
The event will take place on Saturday 14 July and proceeds will go to the Friends of the Lake District.
Walkers will follow a route from Arnside to Kents Bank near Grange-over-Sands.
Sir Chris, who is vice-president of the Friends said: “The Cross-Bay Walk is always an enjoyable occasion for young and old alike. I’m delighted to be supporting the Friends and am looking forward to meeting many people on the day.”
Registration for the event costs £10 with under-16’s taking part for free. Everyone taking part in the walk will also receive a free certificate. The Friends are also encouraging participants to be sponsored for the event.
The walk crosses the potentially dangerous Kent Estuary, noted for catching out unwary visitors with its fast approaching tide and soft sands. The Queen’s Guide to the Sands is an unpaid position but comes with free tenancy of the Guide’s Cottage at Kents Bank.
The Friends of the Lake District walk starts at 2.15pm from Arnside Promenade, with registration from 1pm.
