Organisers of a mountain marathon taking place next month said there are still a few places left.

The Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon will be held in the Scottish Highlands over the weekend of 9 and 10 June.

The exact location will only be revealed 36 hours before the event, but organiser Martin Stone said it will be about two hours’ drive north of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

He said: “The LAMM will take you to wonderful Scottish mountain areas that you may otherwise never take the time to visit.

“The 2012 area is scattered with munros and corbetts and we’ve worked hard to find a site for the midcamp that allows us to provide great courses for all.

“The midcamp will be another wild mountain location.”

Last year’s LAMM was held in the Ullapool area, but organisers, including planner Angela Mudge, a seasoned fellrunner and ex-world mountain running champion, said this 2012 will be a ‘southern’ event.

Mr Stone said the event, which has categories ranging from elite to class D, as well as a score class, is ‘friendly and compact’. “The emphasis is always on providing challenging routes in classic high mountain country,” he said. “The event has a tradition for transporting teams to a number of undisclosed start locations on Saturday morning to make best use of the terrain.”

Entry fees will rise by £5 on Tuesday, with the full, undiscounted fee of £100 charged from 1 June. More details are on the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon website.
