A couple of lost walkers were found after they described their position to rescuers by mobile phone.
The pair, from Sunderland got lost in mist and darkness while walking in the Wet Sleddale area in the eastern Lake District.
Members of the Penrith Mountain Rescue Team were joined by colleagues from the Kendal team and search dogs and handlers in a five-hour search around the Haweswater, Longsleddale and Kentmere Pike areas.
Rescuers quizzed the couple by phone and narrowed down the search area, and they were found near Artle Crag on Branstree, south of Haweswater about 9.30pm.
A spokesperson for Penrith MRT said: “Members of the team escorted the walkers unharmed down to their car at Mardale Head. 12 members of the team were involved for five hours.”

01 January 2012How do you get lost in the Lake District ?
You are supposed to have a map and compass and some knowledge of how to use them .
Granted that not all the paths in this area are as clear as the super highways in other areas of the Lakes but surely if map and compass skills are applied then a momentarily misplaced walker should be able to get themselves out of trouble.
