Two walkers were rescued after getting lost in the dark while tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation was alerted at 8.30pm on Sunday after the 24-year-old man and 20-year-old woman became benighted in low cloud on the 724m (2,375ft) summit plateau of Ingleborough.
A spokesperson for the volunteer team, which carries out rescues both on the fells and in the caves of the Yorkshire Dales, said: “A small team went up and escorted them down to a CRO vehicle near Crina Bottom for transport off the hill.”
The team had earlier that day helped two teenage girls suffering from hypothermia near the summit of Whernside. The girls, aged 14 and 16, were with a party of eight and collapsed near the top of the 736m (2,415ft) fell.
The spokesperson said: “An air ambulance was unable to get near due to low cloud.
“While the CRO was en-route some other walkers came across the casualties and assisted them along the ridge to where they were met by the team and escorted off the hill to near Blea Moor Tunnel. An RAF helicopter then flew the two girls down to Ribblehead for assessment by the ambulance service.”
