Cyclists whose muscle strength is not up to the mark can power along trails in a national park with the help of new electric bikes.
The bikes are available for hire on the High Peak and Tissington Trails in the Peak District.
Charlotte Bowler, cycle-hire manager for the Peak District national park, said: “Electric bikes are ideal for those who struggle to ride a standard bike or maybe find it difficult to keep up with others in their group, and most importantly they’re great fun to ride.
“They’re pedal-assisted, which means that the electric motor only works while you are pedalling so you are still getting a workout.
You can choose from three power-levels: eco, which gives 25 per cent assistance; normal for 50 per cent, and sport 75 per cent, and they have a range of about 25 miles on one charge.”
The cycles are available at the Parsley Hay cycle hire centre, close to the junction of the trails near Hartington. The centre also has a wide range of normal bikes for all ages and abilities, including tandems, trailers for children, and models for disabled people.
Hirers need to book the electric bikes in advance, and should bring photo-ID and a £50 deposit. The bike-hire itself is £15 for a half-day or £25 for the day. Bookings can be made on 01298 84493 or by email.
Parsley Hay is part of the pilot Peak District Electric Bicycle Network, which includes hire points and charge point providers in such places as holiday accommodation, pubs, cafes and visitor attractions. More details are available on its website.
