A walker was airlifted from a fellside after suffering a suspected broken leg.

The 43-year-old man was taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge today when he injured himself.

The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation, which carries out rescues both in the Caves and on the fells of the Yorkshire Dales, was alerted about 9.40am that the walker had suffered a broken leg somewhere on Pen-y-ghent.

A spokesperson for the team said: “CRO responded and deployed search parties from Dale Head and from near Hunt Pot.

“The casualty was located high on the path descending from the summit towards Horton Moor.

“Following treatment by paramedics and a team doctor the casualty was stretchered down to flatter ground and transferred to an air ambulance.”

The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge involves summiting Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in a 39km (24-mile) route, with a traditional target time of 12 hours or less.
