A climber has died after being struck by a rock while on sea cliffs.

Jonathon Woods was climbing with his girlfriend at Bosherton Head in Pembrokeshire yesterday when the incident happened.

The 36-year-old Bristol climber was struck on the chest by the rock and was knocked from his stance but was held after a fall by his belay protection.

Climbers in the area went to his aid, concerned he was having breathing difficulties, and St Govan’s and Tenby Coastguard Rescue Teams went to the scene. An RAF Sea King helicopter from RMB Chivenor also went to the incident, 8km (5 miles) south of Pembroke.

Mr Woods was flown to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, but died from his injuries.

Renowned climber Tim Emmett paid tribute to his friend, known in the climbing community as Woody. “The climbing community is devastated by his loss,” he said. “It was such an unfortunate accident. Our thoughts go to his family and friends.”

And Everest summiteer Kenton Cool Tweeted: “Shocking news about Woody – a great loss – St Govan’s of all places.”
