The Woolpacks, Kinder Scout, where the walkers were found

Two walkers were found safe and well after a night-time search involving 60 volunteer rescuers on the Peak District’s highest mountain.

The pair were benighted on Kinder Scout and rang for help when they got lost on Saturday.

Teams from the Kinder, Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams began searching about 7pm across the southern edges of the plateau.

Search and Rescue Dogs Association handlers and animals also joined the search on the 636m (2,087ft) mountain.

A spokesperson for the Buxton team said: “The two walkers, both in their early 20s from Plymouth, Devon, and Attleborough, Norfolk, were on holiday in the area.

“They had set off to walk part of the Pennine Way on to Kinder Scout and return to Edale. They became disorientated, were overtaken by darkness and called for assistance. Luckily, their mobile phone had a signal.

“Search managers were able to speak to the couple and determined they were well equipped but had been wandering around Kinder for some time, uncertain of where they were. The weather was patchy mist and cold.

“Using local knowledge and experience, search managers prioritised the popular routes on the southern edges of Kinder Scout, and deployed rescue personnel and a search dog along them.”

They were found by rescuers from the Buxton team in the Woolpacks area. After being checked they were escorted to safety and made their way to their campsite in Edale.

• The Edale MRT was called on Sunday to Froggatt Edge where a climber had fallen while soloing in the Downhill Racer area of the crag.

He suffered a short seizure due to head injuries he suffered during his fall. An Edale MRT paramedic joined a colleague from the East Midlands Ambulance Service in giving him medical treatment before he was carried to the top of the crag from where he was flown by air ambulance to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
