He was renowned for offering a cheery wave to Glencoe travellers and fixed it for countless youngsters to fulfil their dreams, but now the cigar-chewing television personality Sir Jimmy Savile can be seen indulging in some very odd extreme activities.
The 84-year-old former disc jockey and presenter of Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It can be seen white-water kayaking, skiing, stunt biking and ice climbing in a video produced to promote Fort William as the Outdoor Capital of the UK.
Or, at least, shellsuit-clad stunt doubles can, as the Leeds-born celebrity lauds the outdoor joys of Lochaber, apparently indulging in some very energetic activities in the area.
Sir Jimmy is seen introducing various clips from the comfort of an armchair in the MTBcut video, directed by Fraser Copeland.
A £40 Sir Jimmy outfit, complete with blond wig and false cigar, was used by outdoor athletes such as Mike Pescod, David ‘Spook’ Munro, Joe Barnes, Danny MacAskill, BJ Doherty and Callum Anderson. Venues include the Nevis Range on Aonach Mòr, the Commando monument at Spean Bridge, Glencoe and Fort William High Street.
The 6½-minute tongue-in-cheek My Outdoor Capital film is a viral effort to boost adventure tourism to the Fort William area.
But it’s not a complete fix for Sir Jimmy, who has taken part in the Ben Nevis Race and the Tour of Britain cycle race, as well as running more than 300 marathons.
And, as the ex-DJ says in the film: “Winter sports? Only idiots would do that; but I’ve been an idiot all my life. I can recommend it most of the time, but not all the time.”
