Police are appealing for help in identifying a woman whose body was discovered following a major search of a Cumbrian lake.
The body was found washed up on the island in the middle of Grasmere lake yesterday after a member of the public reported seeing what looked like a body floating down the River Rothay at 1.30pm as it passed through nearby Grasmere village.
Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team joined police and fire and rescue personnel in a search and the woman was found at 3pm.
Cumbria Constabulary has launched an investigation into how the woman came to be in the water but officers have still not discovered her identity.
Detective Inspector Mike Brown, the senior investigating officer in the case, said: “We are continuing to work with mountain rescue to do a full search up and down the river edges to see if we can find any evidence of where she might have entered the water or anything else that might help to identify her.
“We are also speaking to bed and breakfasts and other accommodation in the Grasmere and Ambleside area and ask that if any female resident has not returned overnight please contact the investigating team.
“We are working hard to identify this woman but we need the public’s help. If you were in the area over the last few days and think you may have seen her, or someone matching her description please get in touch. We are also keen to hear from anyone who has seen any abandoned cars or other vehicles in the local area.”
The woman is described as between 5ft 5in to 5ft 6in (1.65m to 1.68m) tall, white with a pale complexion, between 30 and 50 years old. She has short, light brown slightly curly hair and no tattoos.
She was wearing black Ecco walking boots, white socks, dark blue Liz Claiborne designer jeans and a white vest top. She had a silver coloured ring that from the side looks like two on her right finger, a silver coloured rope bracelet on her right arm and a Bench watch with a purple rectangular face and leather strap on her left arm.
