Wetherlam, scene of the rescue in the early hours of Sunday

Two Lake District mountain rescue teams spent six hours in a night-time search on the fells for a woman who had become exhausted while out walking.

Members of the Langdale-Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team were alerted just before midnight on Saturday night after a family group was reported to be in difficulties in the Greenburn area of Little Langdale.

A spokesperson for the LAMRT said: “We sent a small group to investigate, only to locate them on the ridge of Wetherlam Edge. We called Coniston MRT to assist, since this is in their area, and then provided first aid.”

The mother had collapsed and was unable to continue. The LAMRT spokesperson continued: “We managed to get the woman moving again, but transferred her to a stretcher when Coniston team arrived with it. She was evacuated to Tilberthwaite, fuelled with hot chocolate and custard creams for the family’s drive back to Leeds.”

Wetherlam, a 762m (2,500ft) hewitt, lies at the north-eastern end of the Coniston Fells range, above the copper mines and slate quarries of Tilberthwaite.
