Police searching for a kayaker who went missing yesterday have found a body.

Cumbria Constabulary’s underwater search rescue team discovered the body of a young man in Lake Ullswater in the early hours of today.

A spokeswoman for the police said: “It is believed to be that of the canoeist reported missing the previous day. Relatives have been informed but no formal identification has taken place yet.”

An 18-year-old, believed to be from Lancashire, failed to resurface after his kayak capsized yesterday on the lake, about 2.15pm on Saturday, sparking a major search involving Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, the Coastguard, police and members of the public who were at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Patterdale team said: “A search was made of the area with the team’s rescue boat along with boats from Outward Bound and the national park. A search of the lake shore was also carried out and the Great North Air Ambulance assisted from the air.”

The spokesperson added a body was recovered by police divers at 2.16am.
