The walker who fell to his death on a Lake District fell at the weekend has been named.
Paul Robert Newing, 35, of Dukinfield, Tameside, Greater Manchester, was with two work colleagues when he slid down a snow slope on Great End, in the Scafell range, and fell 200m (650ft) over a crag. Members of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team went to the man’s aid after being alerted about 12.30pm on Sunday.
Members of the RAF Leeming MRT who were training in the area treated the fallen walker, but the teams were unable to resuscitate Mr Newing and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A helicopter from HMS Gannet flew his body from the fellside.
An inquest was opened and adjourned by North and West Cumbria coroner David Roberts.
Great End was the scene of a near escape by mountaineer Alan Hinkes who narrowly avoided being swept from its crags by an avalanche he set off while climbing Window Gully earlier this month.
