Munro baggers can help raise cash for the WaterAid charity

A charity is looking for volunteers for a mass challenge that it hopes will put people on every 3,000ft mountain on the British Isles on one day next summer.

WaterAid, which helps provide clean water for developing countries, is repeating its Munro Challenge, last run in 2007. Almost £¼m was raised by participants during that event.

The goal is to put teams of walkers on all 283 munros, plus the mountains over 3,000ft (914.4m) in Wales, England and Ireland, though of course, whoever chooses the Inaccessible Pinnacle on Skye’s Cuillin range will need climbing skills.

In addition to the 283 Scottish munros, there are four peaks in England topping the mark– Ill Crag and Broad Crag are not included, seven in the Republic of Ireland, and eight in Wales, though we reckon that leaves seven Welsh 3,000-footers out of the challenge.

The event will take place on Saturday, 12 June, 2010.

Already places are being taken. If you want to tackle the English peaks, for instance, you’re out of luck – all the team places are already taken, as is the Inn Pinn.

Teams must have a minimum of four and a maximum of seven members who must all be capable of tackling the mountain in question. The peaks are rated moderate, difficult or severe.

A spokesperson for the Munro Challenge said: “The challenge aims to put a team on the top of each of Scotland’s munros and mountains over 3,000 feet in England, Wales and Ireland between noon and 2pm on the day.

“The first challenge took place in 1995 and the most recent in 2007. Even though the challenge wasn’t quite met, with a number of mountains not being covered, more than £247,000 for WaterAid’s work.”

Minimum sponsorship for each participant is £50, with the aim being to raise at least £300,000 for Water Aid projects. Corporate sponsors can also associate their name with an individual mountain for £100, or £500 for what organisers call the top ten peaks.
