Police in the Highlands say a body found on the shore of a Skye loch is not connected to the disappearance of a walker on the island.
The man’s body was discovered yesterday afternoon at Camasunary on Loch Slapin, a sea loch to the East of Blabhein. He was wearing a wetsuit. Clifford Wannop, an 83-year-old holidaymaker from Alderney, Channel Islands, has been missing since going for a walk in the Kinloch area of Skye on 12 days ago.
Highland Constabulary said the body, which was reported to them at 3.45pm yesterday, was still being identified. A spokesperson said: “The body has been recovered and police enquiries are ongoing to identify the man. A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.
“Police do not believe at this time that there is any connection with Mr Clifford Wannop who went missing from the Kinloch area of Skye on 2 October 2009.”
A renewed search for Mr Wannop at the weekend by mountain rescue teams and police failed to find any trace of the man.
A 65-year-old diver was reported missing the same day as Mr Wannop’s disappearance. The man went swimming about 1.30pm on 2 October off the coast at Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point on the British mainland.
He failed to return after going into the sea near the lighthouse at Point of Ardnamurchan, 50km (31miles) south of Loch Slapin.

14 October 2009Camasunary is not on Loch Slapin.
Should it read Camas Malag?

14 October 2009Good point Garve, and one we pondered. The information has come from Highland Constabulary.
We couldn't find a Camasunary on Loch Slapin, but there is one at the northern end of Loch Scavaig, to the West of Loch Slapin.
Our only thought was that the reference from the police was to a 'local' name not marked on the maps.
There is, as you rightly say, a bay called Camas Malag on Loch Slapin. - Bob Smith, editor
