The students were taken by rescue Land Rover to the team's base

Six students on a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition had to be rescued today after being caught out by bad weather in the Lake District.

The group, from a Gloucester school, used their mobile phone to call 999 when they got into difficulties near Helvellyn, England’s third highest mountain. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team responded to their call and they were found on Whiteside Bank above Keppel Cove.

A spokesperson for the team said: “They had erected their tent and were waiting for the arrival of the team. All of the students, who were wet and cold, were walked off the hill by the team to a waiting Land Rover and brought to the Patterdale rescue centre.”

After being given hot food, the students were handed over to the care of their teachers.
