A walker has died after being found seriously injured by rescuers.

The 51-year-old woman from America was reported overdue from a walk in the Durness area of Sutherland yesterday at 4.50pm. A Sea King helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth joined mountain rescue team members and police in the search of the area, near the northern coast of Scotland.

A spokesperson for the Northern Constabulary said: “The woman was found seriously injured and was transferred to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness by helicopter where she was pronounced dead on arrival.”

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Durness attracts visitors from across the world because of its connections with the late John Lennon, who holidayed in the area as a boy and a teenager.
