A lesbian and gay climbing club was among nine new organisations affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) at its national council meeting yesterday.
The London-based Not So Trad – Southern Lesbian and Gay Climbers’ Club was ratified as an affiliate, along with the Metropolitan Police Mountaineering Club and the Taunton Trailblazers. The meeting, at Hayfield, Derbyshire, also discussed the council’s annual general meeting agenda and the possible appointment of a BMC Cymru officer.
The BMC represents climbers, hillwalkers and mountaineers in England and Wales. Set up in 1944, it now has 63,000 members, about half of whom are in affiliated clubs.
The Not So Trad club was formed in January this year, for ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered climbers and their friends’. It replaces the former Gay Outdoors Club Southern Climbers group.
The BMC’s AGM takes place on 19 April this year.

12 June 2008It's great to see Taunton Trailblazers getting a mention in popular media after only 7 months from formation. The club aims to offer affordable mountaineering experiences to lads from Taunton, Somerset. It is run by volunteers and the current members have visited the Quantock Hills, Exmoor, Dartmoor, Cornwall and the Brcon Beacons. Jo Webber Club Manager
