An unconscious walker was found by chance by a Scottish mountain rescue team on a training exercise.

The team, from RAF Kinloss, was on Sgorr Ruadh in Glen Carron, Wester Ross, when they discovered the man, who had fallen. He was found with head injuries about 1.30am.

The rescue party moved him to less steep ground to enable a Coastguard helicopter to airlift him to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.

A Coastguard spokesman said the chance find probably saved the man’s life. The 958m (3,143ft)  Munro Sgorr Ruadh lies in remote country north-west of Achnashellach railway station. Its north-west face has steep, rocky cliffs, with both winter and conventional climbing routes.
