Cyclists are pleading not to be left out of the coastal access campaign.
The Cyclists’ Touring Club – the campaigning body for those on two wheels – says the Government’s consultation on creating a coastal access corridor is only aimed at walkers. It says cyclists and other non-motorised users have been left out of the plans.
The Government has told the CTC it must show ‘demand and opportunities’ for coastal cycling, so it wants all its members and anyone else who wants to see coastal cycling access set up to give officials their views.
And it warns there’s not much time left. The deadline for submissions is 11 September, so the club wants views now. A spokesman said: “The coast should be a perfect place to cycle, but we’re only allowed to cycle on seven per cent of England's coastline.
“We want to hear about all the places you’d love to cycle, if only you had the chance!”
Last week, the various campaign groups held a media day at Brean Down, north Somerset, to publicise the consultation. As well as the CTC, the International Mountain Biking Association UK, the Ramblers’ Association, British Mountaineering Council, National Trust, British Canoe Union, Equestrian Access Forum, British Caving Association, Open Spaces Society and the YHA took part.
