Lakeland authorities are considering taking action after the Windermere speed limit was allegedly broken by a boat towing a blind water-skier.

Kevan Furber, the skipper of the boat, was interviewed after Lake District National Park Authority officers took video recordings and laser speed-gun readings. Stockport-based Gerald Price, 74, was said to have skied at 28mph during the incident. He holds the blind water-skiing record which he set on Windermere in 2004.

A 10mph limit has been in force on the lake for more than two years. Both Mr Price and Mr Furber are members of the Keep Windermere Alive Association, which opposes the limit.

After being given a warning for one limit-breaking run up the lake, the pair made a further journey and Mr Furber was questioned. National park officers said the evidence will be passed to police and the Crown Prosecution Service, who will decide whether to bring charges.

The bylaw curbing speeding boats on England’s largest natural lake was brought in to cut noise and disturbance. Campaigners against the law say it is disproportionate and have pledged to challenge the authorities.

Eight people have been prosecuted since the introduction of the 10mph limit.
