Hot on the heels of Julia Bradbury’s mountain homage to the Grumpy Old Fellwalker comes a new series devoted to Britain’s uplands.
Comedian Griff Rhys Jones will present the five-part travelogue visiting mountains and fells across the country. Programmes include sequences shot on Ben Nevis and the Cairngorms and in Glencoe, along with visits to Wales, the Lake District and Pennines.
Julia Bradbury: among mountain presenters on our screens this summer
The first programme is due for transmission on BBC1 at the end of this month, with an ascent of Tryfan and a look at Snowdonia’s ecosystems.
Wordsworth’s enduring popularisation of the Lake District also comes under scrutiny, with subsequent examination of the use of the Pennines by the urban workers to escape their industrial drudgery; tourism in Scotland and a final ascent of the most northerly Munro Ben Hope in the company of a well-known outdoors-magazine editor.
Television seems to have cottoned on to the popularity of the outdoors, following the successful biographical treatment of Alfred Wainwright and Julia Bradbury’s well-received programmes devoted to some of his walks, with the commissioning of a second series. She is also involved in a series with the working title of Outdoor Britain: Climbing, during which she will emphasise her action-woman reputation with a series of rock climbs.
There are no firm dates for transmission times for the climbing series, but that and the second series of Wainwright’s Walks should be on our screens some time this summer.
