Scotland’s favourite avian soap opera took a dark turn with the news of a death in the Highland love nest.
Bird-brained Henry, the osprey involved in three-in-a-nest shenanigans at Loch Garten, has trampled on one of his own offspring, killing the chick.
Henry has previously kicked his love rival’s eggs out of the nest, dashing them on the ground. RSPB officials say the latest incident happened when Henry was trying to free his leg from a length of fishing line. Ospreys’ diet consists of fish.
Conservationists running the reserve near Aviemore now hope the remaining two eggs will hatch this weekend after a series of incidents involving Henry, his long-time mate EJ and a rival male bird VS. After destroying VS’s eggs, Henry and EJ produced their own clutch of three, from which one hatched.
