It was announced this morning that Foinaven is not a Munro. Its height was confirmed as falling short of the required 3,000ft, so the number of Munros remains 284.

Survey firm CMCR proclaimed at Falkirk Golf Club that the mountain remains a Corbett, with a height of 911.046m, which works out at 2,988.99606ft, more than 11ft short of the magic number.

The Larbert-based company used the latest Global Positioning System equipment, using satellite signals and corrections beams from land-based stations. The Munro Society commissioned CMCR to settle the debate on whether the mountain qualified as a 3,000-footer.

Results for Beinn Dearg in Torridon are still to be released.
