A young woman was airlifted to hospital after fracturing her skull while scrambling in the Lake District.
The woman, 17, was injured yesterday evening by a rockfall in a gully in Great Langdale while with a party of friends. Emergency services were alerted when their shouts for help were heard in the valley below.
A spokesman for Langdale-Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team said: “The team found her badly injured and in a precarious position.
“She was treated with spinal immobilisation and oxygen and evacuated by helicopter to Furness General Hospital. We had intended to move her to a safer position for winching, but her condition deteriorated and she was lifted immediately, despite the significant risk of further rockfall.”
The accident happened in a gully next to Middle Fell Buttress. The woman, understood to be from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital.
