Authorities say an Exmoor wood is likely to be closed for months.
Access to Culbone Woods was restricted following landslips last weekend. Signs have been erected advising walkers of the closure and giving alternative routes.
A spokesman for the Exmoor National Park Authority said: “It is with great reluctance that we have taken this decision but public safety is our prime concern.
“Due to the long history of landslips in the woods we have a regular regime in place for monitoring the area to ensure that events like last weekend's slips are quickly identified and appropriate action taken.
“We feel it prudent to temporarily close the permitted paths running west beyond Culbone Church until we have had an independent geological assessment made to guide us on what future action may be required to enable safe access in the future.”
The park authority says access to the official coastal path is unaffected. Further details are available from head ranger Mike Leach on 01398 323665.
