An inquest will be held next year into the death of a schoolboy in a caving incident.
North Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service decided no charges would be brought after 14-year-old Joseph Lister died in Manchester Hole in Upper Nidderdale.
The teenager, a student at Tadcaster Grammar School, was in a party from the Bewerley Park Centre, run by North Yorkshire County Council. It is believed he was trapped by rising water in the limestone cave system in November 2005. Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Team, which also deals with cave rescue, found the boy’s body and brought him to the surface.
Manchester Hole is in the stream bed of the River Nidd, near Lofthouse, Pateley Bridge. Joseph was in a group being introduced to caving techniques on the first day of their stay at the outdoor education centre. A post-mortem examination found he died from drowning.
