There’s another chance to upgrade your winter skills next year, thanks to a trust which runs in memory of a climber who died on the Matterhorn.

The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust, named after a 27-year-old Outward Bound instructor who perished 26 years ago, is offering the chance of a one-day course in the Lake District for a bargain price.

Two courses are being run on consecutive days, 2 and 3 March next year, based at Borrowdale Youth Club. Applicants will need to pay for at least one night’s accommodation at the hostel, plus insurance, but the course itself costs only £17. The organisers say they can’t guarantee winter conditions at that time of year, but any elements that can’t be covered practically will be covered in theory.

Applicants should be accomplished summer walkers and climbers who have not previously undertaken a winter skills course. The aim is to increase the safety of mountaineers.

You’ll need your own gear, though ice axes and crampons can be hired for £5 per item. The British Mountaineering Council is a partner in the venture and details are on council’s website. Deadline for applications is 12 January 2007.
