A national park is trying to tempt young people to sample its attractions.

The Yorkshire Dales authority has produced a booklet detailing the best way of getting around the area either under their own steam or with others.

The free publication, What Are You Doing This Weekend? details four walks around the national park’s best-known landmarks in Wensleydale and Malhamdale.

Karen Griffiths, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s interpretation officer, said the idea of the booklet was to provide young people with enough to do on two weekend trips.

“Essentially it’s a handy, easy-to-us guide for young people planning their first stay in the Dales either on their own or with friends.

“It covers accommodation on a shoestring, essential safety information and stacks of useful ideas to keep them entertained when they arrive.

“It is vital that young people get used to coming to the national park, understanding what it is there for, and getting to know and appreciate its special qualities and what it has to offer because they will be its guardians in the future.”

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund have helped the project. The booklet is available from National Park Centres and by phoning the Dales Countryside Museum at Hawes on 01969 666210.
