Sharp Edge, where the woman became cragfast

A woman had to be rescued from a Lake District fell after getting cragfast near a notorious accident blackspot.

The 38-year-old woman got stuck in icy conditions while tackling Sharp Edge on Blencathra, just beyond the area known as the awkward step.

A member of the public discovered her and raised the alarm about 3.55pm yesterday, Friday. Six members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team went to their aid, and other members also joined colleagues in the rescue.

Rescuers used ropes to lead both walkers to safety and they were then helped down from the fell.

The awkward step has been the scene of numerous falls, some of which were fatal. It involves a step down on to a smooth slab with exposed ground either side.

Earlier in the day the Keswick team rescued a man from the fells after he slipped an injured his leg.

The 47-year-old was walking with friends and slipped after taking off his crampons at Coledale Hause, between Eel Crag and Grisedale Pike.

Fifteen mountain rescue team members helped the crew of the air ambulance splint his leg and then carried him to the helicopter, which flew him to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
